Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in the Pennsylvania Railroad's Erecting & Machine Shop storage yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1967. Prominent here is PRR engine #9914, an AS-10AMS built by the American Locomotive Company as number "8485" in May of 1952, rated at 1,000 horsepower, and later renumbered "9914" in preparation for the Pennsylvania-New York Central merger. Brush Mountain dominates the distance.

Description:  Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1967. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4270 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are EP-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. #4270 was constructed as number "5805" in July of 1952 and later renumbered "4270" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, this A-A-A set is waiting for a helper engine to couple on before pulling a passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. Partially visible at the left is the "new" 12th Street Footbridge; partially visible at the right are two structures that are part of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. ("PrrFan18n")

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4268 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #4268 is an EP-22 constructed as number "5768" in April of 1952, rated at 2,250 horsepower, and renumbered "4268" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, this A-B-A set is parked near the 12th Street Footbridge. Its crew awaits the "Proceed" signal to resume pulling this passenger train to Harrisburg and points East.

Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6180 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 3,600 horsepower each. #6180 is an EF-36 built in December of 1967. They have just rounded the Horseshoe Curve and are on their way down the Allegheny Mountains to Enola, Pennsylvania, with a merchandise freight train.

Shown here are Penn Central Railroad engines #6171, #2330, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. #6171 is an SD45 built by GM-EMD in December of 1967 and rated at 3,600 horsepower. #2330 is a GP35 built by GM-EMD in January of 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They're pulling a mixed-cargo freight train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Wave to the engineman!

Both were built by GM-EMD. #4209 is an E7A constructed as Pennsylvania Railroad number "5849" in August of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and renumbered "4209" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. In this context, they've just passed under Juniata's 8th Street Bridge on their way to the Altoona Passenger Station and points West. At the right is position-light signal #2344.

Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central Railroad engines #4352 and #1514. Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #4352 is an FP7A built as Pennsylvania Railroad number "9852" in June of 1952 and renumbered "4352" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger. #1514 is an F7A built as PRR number "9814" in April of 1951 and renumbered "1514" in for the merger. In this context, they're pulling some empty hopper cars up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Looks to me like both locomotives have seen better days! ("Tchowee"; #2 of 2)

Shown here is Penn Central engine #8955, an RT-624 built by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton for the Pennsylvania Railroad as number "8955" in August of 1951 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. Partially visible at the right is PC engine #5577, an RS-3 built by the American Locomotive Company for the PRR as number "8477" in January of 1952 and rated at 1,600 horsepower. The exact date is not recorded.

Description:  Altoona Action. Here is an original photo that I took from the 12th Street Footbridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in June of 1973. Shown here (F to R) are Penn Central Railroad engines #6121, #8071, and another unit whose road number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #6121 is an SD45 delivered to the Pennsylvania Railroad in October of 1966 and rated at 3,600 horsepower. #8071 is a GP38-2. They're passing the Altoona Passenger Station with a long string of hopper cars that they've brought down the Allegheny Mountains from Gallitzin and points West. The large structure in the distance is the now-abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad Test Plant; a bit further to the right is the 17th Street Bridge; in the far distance are the eastern slopes of the Allegheny Mountains.
