FM In Texas
Title:  FM In Texas
Description:  During the early 1970s vhe railfan press spent a lot of ink (and rightfully so) on the SP's Fairbanks Morse fleet in the San Francisco Bay area. The road also had a small OP outpost in El Paso anj Tucscon during the same timeframe that didn't seem to get as much attention. 2394 was one of the West Texas FMs- it's shown in the Cotton Street Yard in Jan 1974.

Title:  Santa Fe CF7s and a local
Description:  ATSF's publicity department would've been hard pressed to come up with a better scene than this for a local; two CF7s in matching paint, a freshly shopped 50ft boxcar and a cab. (that being said, the company accountants would probably view this as a good reason to discourage local service!)

No silver lining for The Rock
Title:  No silver lining for The Rock
Description:  This picture somewhat symbolizes the Rock Island in its later years to me. Driving across the Texas Panhadle parallel to the Rock Island's Amarillo to El Reno main on a cloudy day you spy a light in the distance and jump off the road to get the shot. It seems to take an awful long time to get to you- and you realize it's only doing about 25 to 30 MPH. The blue unit looks good but its a facade for the dirty maroon units behind; the track conditions are hardly befitting a 'mainline' and the cars sway as they go by. You get friendly waves from the Rock crews, as usual, but the scene confirms what you already know; that the road is in serious trouble. GP38-2 4338 is trailed by GP35s 321, 329 and U28Bs 269, 255.

One of three similar units on the RI, it had the!standard GP18 grills but with four 36" fans of earlier Geeps. 1239 went through the Rock's capital rebuild program at Silvis in 1976 and emerged as a GP9; at least that's what RI called it.

SP GP9E 2885
Title:  SP GP9E 2885
Description:  SP GP9E 2885 sits in the small, out-of-the-way yard at Skidmore TX in the summer of 1979. In spite of being numbered in the road's 2800 series for switcher duty it's working on the road today. It's stock headlight package belies its background as a T&NO original.

SW1 with Blunt trucks
Title:  SW1 with Blunt trucks
Description:  Reynolds Aluminum (RMCX) 89 is a candidate for the "there's a prototype for everything" catagory; It's a former CNW SW1 (1274) with Blunt trucks, which are usually associated with AlCo S1/S2 type locomotives. The unit was reportedly acquired by the company in 1979; it's shown here on an SP spur during what appears to be a traction motor change.
