RBBQ Class RBL-5 77165
Title:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77165
Description:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77165 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska built 150 insulated boxcars in 1967 numbered RBBQ 77100 - 77249. When built, they were painted in a forest green and stenciled in the standard Burlington font and the Burlington Route herald was applied to the now blank plate on the right side. This car was stenciled BLT. 8.67 HV, however, it appears it went back to Havelock for repairs as it is also stenciled HV 11-69. At that time, the pre-merger paint scheme was applied, with the intention of painting the word NORTHERN below the word BURLINGTON after the merger was approved. By the time the merger was approved, the font had been changed to a thinner style, which is understandable given the unfortunate spacing of the letters GT in the BURLINGTON on a ribbed car.

RBBQ Class RBL-5 77178
Title:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77178
Description:  RBBQ Class RBL-5 77178 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This was one of 150 cars built during July and August 1967 by the CB&Q shops in Havelock, Nebraska, road numbers 77100 - 77249. The differed from the previous batch of RBL class cars in the improved door handle on the Camel plug door, and the lack of roofwalks and full height ladders to reach the roof. The ICC banned the roofwalk and associated ladders on new cars built after January 1, 1967. As a result, the new cars' handbrakes were also positioned low on the end of the car. The herald was also positioned slightly different between the two series of cars.

RBBQ 78052
Title:  RBBQ 78052
Description:  RBBQ 78052 at Clyde, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The following is from Burlington Bulletin No. 12, REEFERS, edited by Hol Wagner: All insulated boxcars produced after 1963 were both owned and operated by either the CB&Q or the C&S. Cars built after 1963 carried RBBQ or RBCS reporting marks and were lettered BURLINGTON in the yellow band rather than BURLINGTON REFRIGERATOR EXPRESS. RBBQ 78000 - 78299 were turned out by Havelock ( CB&Q shops in Nebraska ) between November 1964 and September 1965. These cars took full advantage of the efficiency and light weight of urethane foam insulation; they were 60 feet long inside and had a capacity of 155,000 pounds. And because the foam was so efficient, thinner sidewalls were possible, so all the RBL's ( and mechanical reefers ) built at Havelock after mid-1963 were outside braced. All 300 had cushion underframes - National 3-C gliding sills for the first 290 cars and Miner M-20 hydraulic cushion underframes for the last 10. Only these last 10 cars, 78290 - 78299, carried HYDRAULIC CUSHIONING lettering on the yellow band; the other 290 cars had no lettering in this space. The last 10 also featured a different style plug door than the other cars. Interestingly though, all 300 cars had the same load-securing equipment inside: Equipco one- and two-piece load dividers, Evans six-position side fillers, and Landreth liner panels on ends, doors, ceiling, and portions of the sides. Cars 78000 - 78099 were assigned to Coors beer service, and the beginning of a massive shift back to rail transport by one of the nation's largest brewers was under way.

Those details were eliminated during the 1960's. Also during the 1960's the Scotchlite herald decal was replaced with a stencil, still in full red/black/white. By 1968, the BN merger was all but assured, and cars repaired after 1968 received the BN Cascade Green pre-merger paint scheme.

CB&Q Class LO-2A 87404
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-2A 87404
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-2A 87404 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Tie following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: Production of Airslide cars began in 1954 and the Q acquired its first 100 of the 2,600 cubic-foot cars from Generfl American in December of that year: Class LO-1's 87000 - 87099. Another 100 nearly identical cars ( but riding on No. 93 roller bearing A-3 Ride Control trucks ) came in 1955, numbered 87100 - 87199 and classed LO-1A. Fifty-two more of the .9-foot long, 2,600 cubic-foot capacity Airslides joined the roster in 1957 as CB&Q Class LO-2 and numbered 87200 - 87251. The next batch of Airslides - 75 more 50 tonners, classed LO-1B+and numbered 87300 - 87373 were delivered in 1958, the year the Q adopted its new image, and consequently they came in the new painting/lettering scheme: gray body, black trucks and undmrbody ( meaning the hopper slope sheets and discharge outlets were now black instead of gray, though the bolsters and draft gear remained gray ), red lettering and a large Scothlite herald. January 1959 saw delivery of another 50 AirslRde cars, and a separate order for 20 identical mates arrived on the property later in the year. Class LO-2A cars 87400 - -87469 were all 2,600 cubic-footers, rated at 70 tons because they rode on No. 86B roller bearing Barber Stabilized trucks. The stiffener beneath the Burlington Route herald was moved up and out of sight on these cars, and four metal angle anchors were added, fne near each corner of the herald plate. These cars, like all Q Airslides, had a baked-on enamel lining. The Class LO-2A's were eventually renumbered into the BN 400800 - 401139 number series.

CB&Q Class HC-1D 182490
Title:  CB&Q Class HC-1D 182490
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class HC-1D 182490 in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in July 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 450 cars built between 1940 and 1961 by CB&Q's Havelock, Nebraska shops, rebuilt in 1968-69, reclassed as HC-1D, and renumbered into the number series 182250 - 182449 and 182500 - 182749. The following is excerpted from the Burlington Route Historical Society publication Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner. The first 200 Class HC-1D cars were painted in light gray ( body ) with black roller bearing trucks, Chinese red lettering, and full-color Scothlite heralds painted on the car sides between posts rather than a larger Scotchlite decal on a metal plate. The second 250 Class HC-1D cars featured a pre-merger paint scheme that eliminated the herald and substituted an all-caps "BURLINGTON" for the previous upper and lower case "Burlington" at the upper left car side. All lettering was red, and a space was left for the word "NORTHERN" to be added once the merger was consummated, but this was never done. The BN opted for black lettering, and the lettering style employed by the Q on all its pre-merger painted cars did not match the Helvetica style ultimately used by the BN. No other Class HC-1's - CB&Q, C&S, or FW&D - ever received this paint scheme. Number 182490 does not fit into either number series, but was stenciled HV 2-69 and was painted in the pre-merger paint scheme.

CB&Q Class LO-10 184621
Title:  CB&Q Class LO-10 184621
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class LO-10 184621 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in August 1980, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was one of 350 Class LO-10 cars built by Pullman-Standard in 1967 ( at the P-S Butler, PA plant ), numbered 184600 - 184949 ( later, BN 457000 - 457349 ). The following is from Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 20, COVERED HOPPERS, edited by Hol Wagner: During 1967 and 1968, the largest group of Pullman-Standard covered hoppers joined the Q roster in three separate orders totaling 575 cars. These big 4,740 cubic-foot capacity grain cars were of a new design featuring "high" sides ( actually shallow sides with a deep bottom edge higher than normal ), very deep hoppers with the center sill passing through them, and center discharge outlets. Trough hatches had quickly become standard on grain cars, and these Class LO-10 and LO-10A cars featured lightweight four-section fiberglass loading hatches. Built after the 1967 AAR rule changes regarding non-essential rooftop running boards and the consequent positioning of hand brake wheels, these cars had low-mounted brake wheels. All but 50 of the 575 LO-10's had straight gravity discharge outlets of either the Enterprise or Fabko variety; cars 184925 - 184949 featured Enterprise Gravac vacuum-assisted gravity outlets.
