Fresh Restoration
Title:  Fresh Restoration
Description:  Our first stop of the day was the Reading Railroad Heritage Museum, taking advantage of the sun's position providing favorable lighting at this earlier hour of the day. Greeting us upon entering the yard is this former RDG GP7, restored within the last year to its as built appearance from the 1950s.

RDG 621
Title:  RDG 621
Description:  Reading Company 621 is a GP7, constructed as part of an order of sixteen units ordered from EMD by the railroad in the spring of 1953. This would be the largest order of these units acquired, the total number of GP7s operated being forty four. Number 621 came equipped with dynamic braking for freight service and served throughout the RDG system that stretched through Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and a small part of Delaware. Unlike many of its sister units, the 621 would never make it to Conrail, having been sold off to Emmons controlled shortline Maryland & Pennsylvania a month before the official startup of Big Blue. Operated around York, PA for a little over twenty years, the locomotive would be reassigned to home rails along the Perkiomen Branch with the takeover of the Penn Eastern Rail Lines by Emmons in the late 1990s. Never operated on the Perk due to some mechanical issues the ex-RDG unit, by this time numbered as MPA 1506, was stored and soon acquired for preservation by the museum. It is currently the only member of the Reading's GP7 fleet in preservation, although a few more exist in operation of various shortlines around the country. Like many GP series units from the 1950s, the 621 is set up for long hood forward operation.

RDG 5308
Title:  RDG 5308
Description:  The sun shines down on this nicely preserved RDG Alco C630, one of the largest locomotives preserved from the former anthracite carrier and also the only surviving member of the Reading's fleet of twelve. Built between 1966 and 1967, number 5308 was assigned to mainline freight service between the railroad's terminals at Philadelphia, Reading, Harrisburg, Allentown, and Jersey City, NJ. Acquired by the museum in the 1980s after a stint on Conrail, the unit has been restored to the railroad's 1960s look, complete with Bee Line Service logos.

RDG 5513
Title:  RDG 5513
Description:  Former RDG 5513 has the distinction of being the first production GP30 from EMD, one of twenty that the Reading Company would acquire for freight service over their mainlines in 1962. The first of the second generation units in RDG freight operations, the locomotive and its sisters were also the first to wear the paint scheme currently presented on this unit, as well as a few others around the museum property. Also take note of the cylindrical radio antenna on the roof above the conductor's seat, a known Reading Company feature.

RDG 900
Title:  RDG 900
Description:  The FP7 fleet was acquired by the Reading in the 1950s for use on long distance passenger service between Philadelphia and outlying points. Cities such as Reading, Pottsville, and Jersey City, NJ would see passage of these units daily at the head end of the railroad's name trains, including the Crusader, the Wall Street, and the King Coal. Only three survive today, including class leader 900, due to their use in operations for SEPTA well into the 1980s. RDG 900 is currently undergoing cosmetic restoration by the museum back to its as built appearance. We were happily able to see sister units 902 and 903 during a visit to Steamtown the previous weekend.

RDG 9123
Title:  RDG 9123
Description:  Two tone green paint now adorns the side of this former electric commuter coach, once operated daily between Philadelphia's Reading Terminal and the railroad's electrified lines through the surrounding suburbs. Number 9123 was constructed by the Harlan & Hollingsworth division of Bethlehem Steel down in Wilmington, DE in 1932. Originally painted green and numbered 867, it was equipped with Taylor style trucks for a smoother ride, which are still retained today. The Reading rebuilt this car at the Reading shops in 1965 with a more modernized interior and a new blue and white paint job, earning it the nickname of Blueliner. The car last saw service for SEPTA in the late 1980s. Some interesting features on the exterior include the end marker lights, and the Reading style "drip strip" over the vestibule doors. The car also retains its headlights on both ends.

Title:  LV 95116
Description:  Long a display among the various pieces of the museum's collection, this former Lehigh Valley caboose awaits departure to a new home outside the former shops of the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad. Built in the 1940s, this style of caboose was originally thought up by Reading Company officials to satisfy government regulations of the time. The Lehigh Valley had cabooses of this style constructed beginning in 1939, the final members of the fleet rolling out of the shops in 1946 for a total of ninety two.

BDLX 9905
Title:  BDLX 9905
Description:  A rather unique piece near the southern end of the museum's yard. This unit originally started out life as a Fairbanks-Morse built H-24-66 Trainmaster for the Wabash Railroad, number 552. Converted into a slug after the Norfolk & Western acquisition of the Wabash, the unit would work through the Norfolk Southern merger in the early 1980s. The Reading Company once operated similar F-M built units, making it a fitting display at this museum of Reading heritage. Perhaps a future restoration back to a full locomotive is in order.

Description:  Another former MU car, rebuilt in the 1960s as a Blueliner by Reading Shops forces. Originally constructed in 1931 and numbered 304, this unit was originally built as a combine, the baggage section replaced with added seating during the modernization. The two larger windows on the near end of the car mark where the baggage door was once situated. This car was also one of the few Blueliners equipped with air conditioning during their time in the shop.

Title:  RDG 1675
Description:  Although similar in appearance to baggage cars operated in this area back in the early 20th century, "Reading Company" 1675 is actually from the Grand Trunk Western. It was once used by the museum as the gift shop at their previous site down the line in Leesport. Note that its heritage is beginning to show through the Reading colors.
