The late afternoon winter sun reflects off of 48-seat coach 4871 as the northbound PANAMA LIMITED rolls out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 487= was built by Budd in 1953 as Santa Fe 2859, one of 45 cars (2816-2860) in Lot. No. 9613, and was unusal in that it still had its skirting. Forty-two of these went to Amtrak as the 4810-4828 and 4850-4872; and forty of these were upgraded into Heritage Fleet cars 4700-4739, but not in numerical order. The 4871 became the 4703 in 1980 and was rebuilt into baggage car 1708 in 1997. |
