Portage. Here is an original photo that I took of the Allegheny Portage Railroad right-of-way just West of Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1972. Shown here are Dr. Lloyd R. Ayers (my father) and "Millie" (our family dog) exploring the space above a stone culvert near the western-most point between Inclined Planes #8 and #9, just below where the Muleshoe Curve was built over the Railroad's right-of-way. For most of its 20-year existence (1834-1854), the Railroad was double-tracked all 37 miles between Hollidaysburg and Johnstown! |
