Niles I. Here is the fourth of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8798 and #8507. Both are ES-15M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #8798 was constructed in January of 1952, while #8507 was built in August of 1952. They're serving as helpers for a mail and express train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to Altoona for further assignments. Also visible is PRR/Railway Express Service cabin car #5010. |
