| Niles I. Here is the eleventh of 11 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6438, a J-1 (2-10-4) "Texas" built in Juniata during October of 1943. It's rounding the Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. Also visible at the far left is the white smoke plume of a westbound train heading up "The Mountain" toward the Curve. |
