FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 9 October 1949. Photo Caption: "Double I-1, 2-10-0, pusher engines emerge from east portal of New Portage Tunnel on the 12-mile return trip to Altoona. Oct. 9, 1949." Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4552 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #4552 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in July of 1944, and retired in January of 1960 after 37 years of faithful service. This photo comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (22-59). |
