LaSalle Street Station Postcard, about 1908,  Contributor's Pick!
Constructed in 1903 by Frost & Granger, Architects, the building served as a station for the Rock Island, New York Central and Michigan Central Railroads, as well as offices for the owner of the railroads. The headhouse and shed was demolished in the mid-1980s and replaced with an office building that contains the Chicago Commodities Exchange trading center. The tracks remain and a small waiting room was built at the back of the building for the commuters that still used the Metra commuter trains operating on the former Rock Island trackage.

Carl Wilmoth General I never imagined as a youth when we got off the train in this building and later left that it would have eventually been torn down. My father was a Rock Island agent-telegrapher in Kansas and took my brother and myself to Chicago for a short vacation back in the early 60s. It was a blast I shall never forget, especially eating in the Fred Harvey House Restaurant and waiting for hours before being able to board the westbound #39 The Imperial later on in the evening for our return trip. I wandered all over the waiting area. This station was an architectural marvel. Thanks for having it in your collection. 4/20/2007 6:28:30 AM
