Fairly nice roster shot of a massive UP 4-8-4 Northern type #817. Note the fireman on top of the tender doing a water level check. History - Alco-Schenectady, 9/1939 Specs - serial #68825, class FEF-2, massive 77" drivers, impressive 300 psi boiler pressure, 24.5x32" cylinders, engine weight of 465,000 lb, tractive effort of 63,611 lb. The loco was "vacated" in May of 1960. The photo is from the Howard W. Ameling collection. No date was given for the photo so an approximate one was used. |
