Description:  Portage. Here is an original photo that I took of the Allegheny Portage Railroad right-of-way just West of Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1972. Shown here are Dr. Lloyd R. Ayers (my father) and "Millie" (our family dog) exploring the space above a stone culvert near the western-most point between Inclined Planes #8 and #9, just below where the Muleshoe Curve was built over the Railroad's right-of-way. For most of its 20-year existence (1834-1854), the Railroad was double-tracked all 37 miles between Hollidaysburg and Johnstown!

Photo Caption: "Here's another view of the restored culvert. You can see where the new stonework was pieced into the barrel of the vault toward the outside of the arch on each side. The National Park Service has restored this and about ten others in the park. This one was restored long enough ago (early-2000's) that the exterior has weathered to the point that it looks like it has always been there. (dkb)"

Description:  Portage. Here is an original photo that I took at the Muleshoe Curve just West of Duncansville, Pennsylvania, during the Summer of 1972. Shown here is Dr. Lloyd R. Ayers (my father) observing the small stream that flows through the three culverts which pass underneath the Curve. This part of the Curve is actually an embankment constructed with the till from two cuts on either side of a small valley. The PRR's right-of-way was built over the Allegheny Portage Railroad's path near this point.

Description:  It's just my opinion, but it seems that Railbanked means keeping light passenger rail (unwanted competition) out of the area. Been wrong before, but around here, it seems that way. Have you noticed that tires seem to find their way trackside?
